VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — Police in northwestern Indiana fatally shot a fleeing male suspect during an exchange of gunfire Thursday, authorities said.
Valparaiso and Porter County officers had been dispatched on a report of a suspicious person displaying a handgun, Indiana State Police said. Officers found the man, who began fleeing, and during a foot pursuit, an exchange of gunfire took place between the suspect and the officers.
The suspect sustained injuries from the gunfire and was transported to a hospital, where he was declared dead, police said. His name was not immediately released.
